Navigating through the areas we live, work, and play has invariably been a predicament for all of us. Even with the advent of GPS and Google Maps, we all eventually lose our way. Those who are quickly dismissive of wayfinding point to these technologies as adequate replacements for the signage and other means used to direct us to where we want to go. But an effective wayfinding system is much more than directions to a defined location. Through clear signage, thoughtful design, and the effective use of branding, a community can have a wider impact than how to get to City Hall.

What is Community Wayfinding?

As defined by Wikipedia, Wayfinding “encompasses all of the ways in which people orient themselves in physical space and navigate from place to place.” When most people think of wayfinding, their minds immediately go toward directional signage. Why not? Directional signage is at the root of wayfinding, but there’s more to it than that.

Wayfinding can be a variety of aspects that help you know where you are or where you want to be. This can include entry signs at the edge of a community. But it can also mean thoughtfully placed art that lets you know you are downtown. It can even be an archway that marks the entrance to a creative district or a park that announces your arrival to that area.
