Back in May Rural Resurrection posted about the Nebraska Department of Economic Development’s (DED) announcement to open up the application process for a special round of grant funding to help those communities affected by the spring flooding this year. The Disaster Recovery Housing grants opened up $3 million in funding under a special disaster recovery allocation of the Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund (NAHTF).

DED received six applications for assistance through the grant program. All six of the applications were selected to be awarded $500,000, providing a total of $3 million to recovery efforts. Those awarded were:

  • Growing Regional Economic Activity Today (Nebraska City Area): $500,000
  • Greater Fremont Development Foundation: $500,000
  • City of Peru: $500,000
  • Village of Lynch: $500,000
  • Pierce County: $500,000
  • City of Wood River: $500,000

As the award announcement on the Nebraska DED website states, “Planned projects span from demolishing and rebuilding homes outside the flood plain to rehabilitating homes, building new units and assisting families with down payments on new homes.”

Wood River Mayor Greg Cramer has already noted his delight about receiving the funding. His beleaguered community was hit hard by the floods this spring. They will also be receiving $15,000 in funding from the Nebraska Bankers Association to help recovery efforts as well. Someone in Wood River is leaving no stone unturned when looking for recovery funding.

It is a bit disheartening that more communities didn’t apply for this funding. There were plenty of towns in Nebraska that could’ve used that funding.
