November is National Entrepreneurship Month. What started as a day in 2010 has morphed into a month-long celebration. National Entrepreneurship Month is the best time to honor the innovative spirit of entrepreneurs in your community. Entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of good rural economies. They create jobs, foster innovation, and contribute to community growth.

The Importance of Entrepreneurship in Local Communities

Entrepreneurs play an important role in building strong, economically sustainable communities. They provide new products, services, and/or technologies that meet the needs of the people in your community, often filling gaps that other businesses cannot adequately fill. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses represent 99.9% of all U.S. businesses. They also employ nearly half of the country’s private workforce and create two-thirds of all new jobs.

In addition to job creation, entrepreneurship promotes local economic growth by:

  • Stimulating innovation: Entrepreneurs bring fresh ideas that push industries forward and improve consumers’ quality of life.
  • Building Community Pride: Successful businesses create a sense of ownership and pride within communities, fostering a more connected and engaged population.
  • Strengthening the Local Tax Base: Entrepreneurs fill business spaces, making properties more prosperous and potentially supporting the local tax base through property taxes and sales taxes.

Despite these immense contributions, entrepreneurs often face obstacles such as limited access to capital, mentorship, and networks. That’s where the community comes in.

Community Builds Community

A Time to Celebrate and Invigorate

National Entrepreneurship Month is more than just a time for celebration. It reminds us that entrepreneurs’ success is tied to the communities in which they operate. By offering resources, mentorship, funding, and celebrating entrepreneurial success, communities can help foster the kind of environment that leads to innovation, job creation, and sustainable growth.
