Most of the recent posts about the Midwest floods on Rural Resurrection have been about Nebraska or Iowa. However, a number of communities throughout the Midwest have been devastated by the onslaught of rising floodwaters.

The state of Missouri is especially taking a hit as both of the overwhelmed Missouri and Mississippi rivers traverse through the state on the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Time Magazine (Yes! A national news source!) recently wrote a story about the impact on the state. Time reports that nearly 400 roads have already been closed. More closings are expected to happen as the rivers crest and levies fail. Towns like Winfield, Ste. Genevieve, and LaGrange are watching the waters rise as they prepare for the worst.

As the Kansas City Star Reports, 43 levies have been over-topped since May 22nd. Residents of Lexington, Missouri were not as worried about their homes as the community’s water plant. If the floods broke through, the town of 4,700 would’ve been without drinking water for a month. However, a recent Facebook post by Mayor Fred Weidner likely calmed their hearts. Check out the town’s Facebook page for more how the town came together to fight the flood.

Meanwhile the homes and businesses in Craig, Missouri aren’t as lucky. As TV station KSHB reports, the residents of that small town are being forced to evacuate again, just a few months after they had to evacuate in March.

Rural communities throughout the Midwest are still being impacted by floodwaters with no end in sight. In fact, the Army Corps of Engineers have let it be known that they expect water releases from reservoirs on the Missouri to be above average through the summer and possibly until November.

Stay strong rural America.
