Working during the summers after high school, I was provided with a work truck to utilize as I went about my tasks. Back then work trucks often came with an AM-only radio. It regulated me to local, rural radio stations. These stations would often play the day’s Paul Harvey newscasts. Paul was one of the last radio greats, with a voice that was enjoyable to listen to, with news and information that I found valuable. But he also had a show called, “The Rest of the Story“. It was a series of facts and information, typically about a famous person that was revealed at the end. It gave you more insight about someone you thought you knew already.

APA Nebraska is also trying to help tell the rest of the story with their relatively new podcast series, “Booked on Planning“. Led by the efforts of Stephanie Rouse (@planning_lady), Booked on Planning (@BookedPlanning) was created with the intent to expand on books to help listeners prepare for the AICP (APA’s professional certification) exam. But it has grown to, as the website states, “learn and grow our understanding of how cities function and how we can ensure they function well for everyone.”

Each month cohosts Stephanie Rouse and Jennifer Hiatt mic up with various authors to discuss their books. The two hosts get a little more in-depth with the authors beyond their writings. Yes, most of the readers of Rural Resurrection are not professional planners. But some of the books that Stephanie and Jennifer discuss have aspects that can be helpful to rural communities.

Although the show has been around for little over a year, they’ve already hosted over 40 podcasts. They’ve also had some notable guests from the planning world, including author Jeff Speck and Jack Dangermond, the co-founder of ESRI.
