Ghost Towns: Links to Stories

The Ghost Towns series of posts has been a popular set of posts on this blog. As stated in each post, it is important to learn from these ghost towns to help us avoid our communities becoming one as well. However, some of the stories in this category are just interesting tales to read.

Ghost Towns: Mystic, South Dakota

What better way to start a category about ghost towns than a town called Mystic? Just like California, the Black Hills of South Dakota has a number of ghost towns that hearken back to back to the days of a gold rush.

Ghost Towns: Lemoyne, Nebraska

To consider Lemoyne, Nebraska a ghost town is somewhat of a fallacy. The Lemoyne still exists as an unincorporated community, just not where it originally sat. The original foundations of the original buildings of this community lie under approximately 50 feet of water in what is now Lake McConaughy.

Ghost Towns: Taconite Harbor, MN

Some ghost towns actually aren’t that old. Taconite Harbor along the North Shore of Lake Superior certainly falls under this category. Originally built in the late 1950s, the town was originally constructed to house the workers at a nearby power plant.

Ghost Towns: Athelstan, Iowa

Like most of the communities in this series, the name likely won’t ring a bell for most people. Even for many of those in southern Iowa. But it holds a place in my heart due to my connection to its demise.

Ghost Towns: Ardmore, South Dakota

While conducting some research at my job, I came across the story of Ardmore, South Dakota. Interestingly enough, there’s a residential subdivision in the city that I work for named “Ardmore”. However, that subdivision doesn’t have the sad story that this former town has in the sandhills of South Dakota.

Crystal Springs, North Dakota, is an interesting Ghost Town that we can learn a few clues to the survival of our own community from. It highlights a couple of issues that can impact your community as well. The devastating impact of fires and how the lack of planning related to highway/interstate construction can ruin the future of your community.

Ghost Towns: Gilman, Colorado

Gilman, Colorado, is an interesting Ghost Town that we can learn a few clues to the survival of our own community from.
