Once again Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) has opened up the coffers to help those in need after the recent flooding disaster. Earlier, we had a post on here about Nebraska DED opening up an application period for a special round of hazard mitigation planning funding through the use of CDBG funds. Now the Nebraska DED has opened up the coffers once again, this time to provide Disaster Recovery Housing Project funds.

Nebraska Department of Economic Development to Provide Disaster Recovery Housing Funds

The Department will award up to $3,005,000 in funds to eligible applicants in communities that were impacted by the floods in March of this year. Those eligible would include; public housing authorities; community action agencies; community-based, neighborhood-based or reservation-based nonprofit 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) organizations; and for-profit developers and contractors applying alongside a previously mentioned eligible applicant.

The Nebraska DED has deemed eligible activities to include:

  • New construction; rehabilitation; reconstruction; or acquisition and rehabilitation of rental housing units.
  • New construction; rehabilitation; reconstruction; or acquisition and rehabilitation of units for homebuyers or homeowners.
  • Acquisition and rehabilitation/conversion or reconstruction of property into housing units.
  • Demolition of housing units damaged by the flooding, when included with a housing project.

Funding for the Disaster Recovery Housing Project is coming from the Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund (NAHTF). To find out more, check out the link above.

That’s two grant programs provided by Nebraska DED to help communities impacted by the March floods. Yet nothing has come out of Iowa Economic Development Authority. It’s time to step up IEDA.
